He has also directed Hindi and Telugu films, which are remakes of his own Tamil films. Many of his films have been critically acclaimed, most notably his semi-autobiographical films "Vaaranam Aayiram" (2008) and "Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa" (2010) and his thrillers "Kaakha Kaakha" (2003), "Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu" (2006), "Yennai Arindhaal" (2015) and "Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada" (2016). "Vaaranam Aayiram" won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil. Menon produces films through his London Stock Exchange-listed Photon Kathaas film production company and his production "Thanga Meengal" (2013) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
After "Yennai Arindhaal", Menon resumed work on his film with Silambarasan under the new title of "Achcham Enbadhu Madamaiyada", with Manjima Mohan joining the cast to replace Pallavi Sharda. Anjali Rao was born on 29 April 1990 in Bathinda, Punjab, India to Telugu speaking parents from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. As her father was an army Officer she travelled across the northern part of India and studied in army schools during her childhood. Her father was later transferred to Chennai and she consequently finished her schooling in Kendriya Vidyala Meenambakkam and followed that up with a BBA and MBA at Vels University in Chennai. During her time in college, Anjali Rao became involved in modelling and worked on commercials which gave her an entry into the film industry. Anjali Rao began her career playing supporting roles in films, notably appearing in the Nithya Menen-starrer "Malini 22 Palayamkottai" (2014), as Vijay Sethupathi's pair in the village drama "Vanmam" (2014) and as a ghost in the horror film "Baby" (2015). She later worked with Gautham Menon in "Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada" (2016), featuring as Silambarasan's sister.
She made her film debut in 2005 in the Marathi film "Kunku Zale Vairi" and was nominated for the 'Best Actress Zee Gaurav Award' for her performance in the film. In the next year she acted in another film "Aaila Re!!" . After seven years she made a comeback to films with three Marathi projects, Atul Kale's "Asa Me Tashi Tu", Tejas Deoskar's "Premasutra" and Gashmeer Mahajan's "Dhava Dhava Khun Khun". "Asa Me Tashi Tu" and "Premasutra" were romantic films. In the former she played an urban career oriented Punjabi girl for which she had to speak Marathi with a Punjabi accent and a Goan catholic girl named Saniya in the latter. She had shot for two films with actor Sachit Patil which did not release. She also acted in a Kannada film "Om" with Arjun Sarja. She was signed as the female lead for Gautham Menon's next Tamil film "Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada" opposite Silambarasan, but couldn't continue allot bulk dates to the film and was replaced by Manjima Mohan.
During the making of "Idhu Namma Aalu", the film's production delays meant that director Pandiraj and Silambarasan had difficulties. In July 2014, Silambarasan had changed his hairstyle in between schedule breaks, leaving Pandiraj unhappy. Silambarasan subsequently disclosed to the media that "Idhu Namma Aalu" was his production and that others should not question his involvement in the project. Pandiraj later also publicly clashed with Silambarasan's brother, the composer Kuralarasan, stating his annoyance at the delay in providing the film's music. He also defended actress Nayantara against a complaint made by Silambarasan's father, producer T. Rajender, and stated the actress had wasted almost two years on the film due to the producers' poor organisation and was still yet to be paid for her work. He further stated that Silambarasan was insisting an extra "kuthu" number that the script did not warrant and that Rajender, Kuralarasan and Silambarasan were unnecessarily interested in making sure that the song was included against Pandiraj's wishes. Gautham Menon has also spoken out against the actor's lack of punctuality, revealing that the actor failed to turn up for a shoot abroad during the making of "Achcham Enbadhu Madamaiyada", prompting a delay in the film's production. However he has also labelled Silambarasan as an "outstanding actor" and noted his high levels of comfort and trust in Silambarasan's ability.
