Prior to release, the track gained buzz after being played anonymously with speculation increasing about the author after Dutch record label Spinnin' Records released a clip of the track online only titled "Animals (Teaser)". It started to reach even more speculation after a Vine video featuring Agnes from "Despicable Me" was posted. The track was, at various times, attributed to other acts like Hardwell, GTA, Sidney Samson and Bassjackers before the actual identity of the producer was revealed.

On February 20, 2015 Afrojack played at Ultra Music Festival Argentina for the first time the song "What We Live For", a collaboration between him and Bassjackers. The single "Alamo", which a collaboration with the Dutch DJ and producer Brooks, was released on May 25, 2015 through Showtek's label Skink. That year the group released a single, "Memories" with KSHMR, in the middle of a tour in the US and Canada.

He released "The Lion Across The Field EP" on 13 May 2016, his first album. He co-wrote and co-produced 'Tsunami' by DVBBS & Borgeous, as well as 'Stampede' by DVBBS, Borgeous, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, among other songs. Late 2013 saw his first major US tour, traveling the country with Bingo Players and Bassjackers. After a time playing small venues, he began to attend festivals as well. Since 2013 he has performed at festivals such as Electric Zoo Festival, Voodoo Experience, Coachella, a main stage slot at TomorrowWorld, Northern Lights Festival, Euphoria Festival, Webster Hall, and Ruby Skye. In March 2014, "Billboard" named him one of the Top 10 Artists to Watch at Ultra Music Festival. He toured Europe in 2014 with his "Let’s Get Fucked Up Tour," then traveled North America with his "Peyote Tour." Plans for an Asian tour were also announced.
In 2011, the group collaborated on the album "Kiss from the Past" by Allure, one of the musical projects of Dutch producer Tiësto. In 2012, they collaborated with Tiësto again on the singles "Miami / Chasing Summers" included in the album "", and on a single titled "Hell Yeah!".
