Gerring was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was the son of lector, PhD Hugo Gerring and
(née Åström). He passed "studentexamen" in 1934 and the reserve officers exam in 1939 (he was a lieutenant in the cavalry reserve 1942-1953) and received a Candidate of Law degree from Uppsala University in 1939. Gerring conducted clerkship at the Stockholm Town Hall Court from 1940 to 1942 before becoming an attaché at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1942.
During teacher training at St Joseph's Teacher Training College in Belfast (now merged with St Mary's, University College), Heaney went on a placement to St Thomas' secondary Intermediate School in west Belfast. The headmaster of this school was the writer Michael McLaverty from County Monaghan, who introduced Heaney to the poetry of Patrick Kavanagh. With McLaverty's mentorship, Heaney first started to publish poetry in 1962.

In the introduction to McLaverty's "Collected Works," Heaney summarised the poet's contribution and influence: "His voice was modestly pitched, he never sought the limelight, yet for all that, his place in our literature is secure."
