Jan Hoogsaat (March 12, 1654 – November 29, 1730) was a Dutch Golden Age painter.
Hoogsaat was born and died in Amsterdam. According to Houbraken, he was one of the best pupils of Gerard de Lairesse. He painted in Het Loo palace and he painted the ceiling of the citizen's hall ("burgerzaal") of the city hall (today the Royal Palace of Amsterdam).
De Lairesse attracted many pupils, including Jan van Mieris, Simon van der Does, and the brothers Teodor and Krzysztof Lubieniecki. According to Houbraken, Jan Hoogsaat was one of his best pupils. According to the RKD his pupils were Jacob van der Does (the Younger), Louis Fabritius Dubourg, Jan Goeree, Gilliam van der Gouwen, Johannes de Lairesse, Theodor Lubienitzki, Bonaventura van Overbeek, Jan Wandelaar, and Zacharias Webber (the Younger).
Nierop took on the name Hoogsaet or Hooghsaet after moving to Amsterdam, where he later died in 1610, leaving a son Jan and daughters Trijn and Maritje. His son Jan Dircksz. Hoogsaet became a compass-maker and was presumably related to Dirck Rembrantsz van Nierop. Jan Dircksz was married 5 Febr. 1600 in Amsterdam and his father Dirck Pietersz was a witness "living on the Haarlemmersluys". In 1614 Jan was shunned from the Mennonites of Amsterdam for "living in sin". In 1623 Jan's sister Trijn became a Diacones sister. Jan's daughter Catrina Hoogsaet had her portrait painted by Rembrandt.
