The Pacific mutton hamlet "Alphestes immaculatus" is the type-host of "Pseudorhabdosynochus guerreroensis", and the type-locality is Cantiles de Mozimba in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, hence the species name ("guerreroensis" is a reference to Guerrero). The species has also been found on the Rivulated mutton hamlet "Alphestes multiguttatus" and the spotted grouper "Epinephelus analogus".
Opisthothylax is a monotypic frog genus in the family Hyperoliidae. The sole species is Opisthothylax immaculatus, also known as the gray-eyed frog . It may also dig into sand to avoid detection.
The species was also independently renamed three times after Forsskål's description, the first coming from Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg, who named the species "Caranx immaculatus", although he did not accurately publish the name, leading Georges Cuvier to rename the fish as "Caranx auroguttatus" in 1833, which was later transferred to "Carangoides". In 1871, Carl Benjamin Klunzinger once again proposed a new subspecies (or variety) name for the fish, "Caranx fulvoguttatus" var. "flava". All names except "Carangoides bajad" are considered to be junior synonyms under the ICZN rules, and are rendered invalid and not used.
Some authors have tentatively defined putative monophyletic assemblages within the genus "Trichomycterus" based on the possession of unique morphological features. The "T. brasiliensis" species-complex includes "T. brasiliensis", "T. iheringi", "T. maracaya", "T. mimonha", "T. pirabitira", "T. potschi", "T. vermiculatus" and several undescribed species apparently endemic to the main river basins draining the Brazilian Shield. However, an assemblage of species from south and southeastern Brazil is also supported that includes "T. castroi", "T. davisi", "T. guaraquessaba", "T. iheringi", "T. immaculatus", "T. itatiayae", "T. mboycy", "T. mirissumba", "T. naipi", "T. nigricans", "T. papilliferus", "T. plumbeus", "T. stawiarski", "T. taroba", "T. triguttatus" and "T. zonatus". "T. aguarague", "T. alterus", "T. belensis", "T. boylei" and "T. ramosus" and also form a diagnosable species assemblage.
The great sand eel can be distinguished from the lesser sand eel because the origin of its long dorsal fin is located behind the level of the pectoral fin. Corbin's sand eel ("Hyperoplus immaculatus") is very similar to the greater sand eel in the way that it lacks a protrusible upper jaw and its similar size. However, it can be distinguished by the lack of the black spot on the snout, but it does have a black chin. Its dorsal fin has 59 to 62 rays. The overall color is darker than the other sand eels, it is found offshore, and tends to be found more on the western side of the United Kingdom
