Izanami died giving birth to Kagutsuchi (incarnation of fire), also called Homusubi (causer of fire) due to severe burns. She was then buried on Mount Hiba, at the border of the old provinces of Izumo and Hoki, near modern-day Yasugi of Shimane Prefecture. In anger, Izanagi killed "Kagutsuchi". His death also created dozens of deities.
Kagutsuchi was the patron deity of blacksmiths and ceramic workers. He is worshipped in several shrines, one of which is Atago Shrine, near Kyoto.
He was the culprit behind Labrys' kidnapping and the P-1 Grand Prix, working together with a malevolent entity called Hi-no-Kagutsuchi. Minazuki agrees to gather the Persona Fragments to fully summon Kagutsuchi, in exchange that he will destroy the world, believing it will end Sho's suffering. When the Persona fragments are gathered and Kagutsuchi was successfully summoned, Kagutsuchi betrays him and possesses Sho's body. After Kagutsuchi's defeat at the hands of Yu and Adachi, Sho is unable to sense Minazuki within him, but is now able to independently summon his Persona. After being defeated by Yu one last time, he is inspired by the power of Yu's bonds and leaves to start his own journey, vowing to kill Yu the next time they meet.

The name "Kagutsuchi" was originally a compound phrase, consisting of "kagu", an Old Japanese root verb meaning "to shine"; "tsu", the Old Japanese possessive particle; and "chi", an Old Japanese root meaning "force, power".
According to the Kojiki, various gods were born from the relationship between Izanagi and Izanami until the fire deity, Kagutsuchi, at birth burned Izanami's genitals and wounded her fatally. Izanagi, witnessing the death of his beloved wife, in rage took the ten-grasp sabre and crushed his child, Kagutsuchi. A number of gods were born from the blood and remains of Kagutsuchi. Subsequently, Izanagi went to the land of Yomi (the world of the dead) to find Izanami, however when he found her, she had become a rotting corpse and from her parts other gods had arisen, causing the flight of Izanagi to the world of the living. Then Izanagi performed the misogi ritual purification through which more gods are born. The last of these are the three most important gods of Shinto: Amaterasu, goddess of the sun; Tsukuyomi, deity of the moon; and Susanoo, god of the sea.

Hino-Kagutsuchi is the one who threw Labrys in a Midnight Channel after tampering with her memories in a bid to lure both the Investigation Team and the Shadow Operatives into the TV world. When that eventually fails, he manipulates Sho Minazuki into collecting Persona fragments, appealing to the boy's memories of abuse under Shuji Ikutsuki and desire to destroy the world, and uses the Minazuki half as his direct vessel.
According to legend the father of Japan, Izanagi (伊邪那岐 "Izanagi"), beheaded his own son Kagutsuchi (軻遇突智 "Kagutsuchi") the fire deity, as punishment for burning his mother to death. As he performed the act the blood dripped from his sword splashing onto the rocks below him, giving birth to several gods. Two of which were Takemikazuchi along with Futsunushi (経津主神 "Futsunushi-no-kami") the deity of Katori Shrine. Both are considered great deities of the military arts and have been sought by many swordsmen and those pursuing the martial arts throughout history.

Choosing to support a Reason will result in a different ending depending on who is chosen, but in each the world is reborn in the image of the chosen Reason after the Demi-fiend fights Kagutsuchi to prove his resolve. Chiaki and Isamu die before the Demi-fiend begins and give him their blessing in spirit form, while Hikawa accompanies the Demi-fiend into their new world. If Takao's wishes are followed, the Demi-fiend fights Kagutsuchi and the world is returned to its pre-Conception state, resurrecting and restoring all the main characters. If the Demi-fiend rejects Takao's wishes, Kagutsuchi curses him for allowing the world to die and departs, leaving the Demi-fiend as the only survivor in a barren world of demons, trapped as it is until another Conception can happen. If the Demi-fiend fulfills Lucifer's request of collecting the Candelabra from the Fiends, Kagutsuchi attacks him and is destroyed, breaking the Great Will's control over the worlds. After this, Lucifer fights the Demi-fiend to test his strength, then declares him to be the ultimate weapon in the upcoming war against the Great Will.

Soku-no-kuni is the yomi in Japanese mythology ruled by the god Amatsu-Mikaboshi. The realm of Soku-no-kuni is a parallel of heaven and reflects the bitterness of the goddess Izanami after she died giving birth to the fire god Kagutsuchi and ended up in the Underworld where she remained, trapped behind a boulder that the horrified Izanagi placed there.
Marie makes a playable appearance in "Persona 4 Arena Ultimax", available as downloadable content. Her role in the game that she meet up with Yu earlier before the other Investigation Team meet him. After Yu and Adachi defeat Kagutsuchi, Sho is revealed to be alive but unable to sense Minazuki within him. He reveals that after Ikutsuki's experiments on him failed, he awakened in a hospital with all his medical expenses paid by Ikutsuki. He traveled around the world until he ended up in Inaba, where he observed Yu and his friends solving the serial kidnapping/murder case. He was then confronted by Hi-no-Kagutsuchi, who asked him if he wanted to destroy the world, and he agreed. Yu tries to convince Sho not to be afraid of bonding with people, but Sho replies that he can only understand people by fighting them. Understanding this, Yu challenges Sho to one last fight and once again emerges as the victor.
When Izanagi's sister-wife dies giving birth to the fire god Kagutsuchi, his destroying it creates various deities, including the water dragon Kuraokami. After Izanagi goes to the underworld in a futile attempt to bring Izanami back to life, he returns to the world and undergoes ritual purifications to cleanse himself of hellish filth. He creates 12 deities from his garments and belongings and 14 (including the 3 Watatsumis) from bathing himself.
Adachi eventually makes his move to destroy the crystallized Persona fragment that Sho had captured. He manages to crack the crystal, but is severely beaten by Sho after the latter uses his borrowed power to within an inch of his life until Yu intervenes. Despite being former enemies, Adachi and Yu team up to defeat Sho and Hino-Kagutsuchi, and with the world saved, Adachi returns to his cell and is peacefully visited by his old friend, Ryotaro Dojima.
