There is one Vilwamangalam family listed among the Saagara Dwijans. It is likely that his disciples might have stayed with him and perhaps later they began to be referred to as Vilwamangalam.
Sureswaracharya, the disciple of Sree Adi Shankara, was the guru of the first Vilwamangalam.
The music was composed by V. Dakshinamoorthy and lyrics was written by Abhayadev and Vilwamangalam.
OTHER claims : During his stay in the Mattham at Trichambaram, after gifting Vadakke Mattham and properties to Othanmaar Mattham, Vilwamangalam reached Vishnumangalam temple near Edaneer Mattham, before starting off to Banares (Kaasi). He stayed in Edaneer Mattham as requested by the Yaadava families of Trichambaram, and under the care of those local families who later took up Samnyaasam, apparently from Vilwamangalam Swaamiyaar.
"Sri Vasudevapuram" temple is built for Vilwamangalam Swamiyar's mother for offering prayer during her old age. Vilwamangalam Swamiyar was so great a Bhaktha (devotee of) Sri Krishna that he was said to possess the ability to actually "see" him. He was instrumental in setting up several famous temples in Kerala such as Thiruvananthapuram, Thiruvaarppu, and Cherthala Kaarthiaayani.
'PUTHENCHIRA Vilwamangalam Swamiyar belonged to Puthenchira. The Paddy fields near Anappara(his asthanam) is still known as Vilwamangalam padam. Lord Krishna in Paramel Thrikkovil Sreekrishna Temple was his paradevta. The place where she used to live is still known as Kurooparambu.
Vilwamangalam Swamiyar's Illam is believed to be in the present KCAET campus. Vilwamangalam is the same as "Vella" Illam of Tavanur (from "Thapasanoor", the village of the "Thapaswi", the saintly). The compound and basement remnants of this Illam exist even today. "Vasudevapurm" temple is built for Swamiyar's mother for offering prayer during her old age. "Yogeeswara Pooja" is performed on the Sraadhham day (death anniversary) of the Swaamiyaar, on the Illam remnants. The Swaamiyaar's writings about Mookkuthala Bhagavathy, Sukapuram Dakshinaamoorthy and Triprangodeappan appear to substantiate this view. Ulloor suggests that the Sanskrit name of the Illam would have been "Kodandamangalam" which translates to "Villumangalam" and later called as Vilwamangalam and Vella.
The idol in this temple was once installed on a hill named Othar by Lord Parasurama. But the idol drifted to a farm because of a heavy flood. A magician (Odiyan) in that place found the idol and gave it to 'Vilwamangalam Swami' for installation. Vilwamangalam recognized its supernatural and gave it to a sage named Udhayarkkan. That sage installed the idol and the King of Chembakassery built a temple for it. Five poojas are offered following the Manayathattu thantric rites.
The beautiful and unique Sri Krishna idol made of jet black stone is in the form of child Sri Krishna with butter in both hands. It is believed to have been the idol worshiped by Vilwamangalam Swamiyar.
Vilwamangalam Swamiyar or Vilwamangalathu Swamiyar is the name of more than one saint who lived in India. The first Vilwamangalam, a Swamiyar belonging to Naduvil Madhom, who lived in the 8th century. The spot of his samadhi is to the west of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The second saint who belonged to Thekke Madhom,Thrissur lived during the middle of 14th century. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Guruvayoorappan. Both the Swamiyars were native to Malai Nadu. The first Swamiyar was born in Sukapuram Gramam in Kerala. The second Swamiyar was renowned all over India. Bengalis believe that he was born in Bengal while Oriyans believe in Orissa, though tradition in Kerala implies that he belonged to Panniyoor village. “Sreekrishna Karnamritham” is his devotional masterpiece, written under an unspecified name "Leelasukan". The second Vilwamangalam is closely associated with several famous temples in Kerala such as Thiruvarppu, and Cherthala Kaarthiaayani.

The past of the temple is still obscure except for some myths. It was at this place where Divakara Muni Vilwamangalam, the great Tulu Brahmin sage, did penance and performed poojas. Legend has it that one day Lord Narayana appeared before him as a child. The boy’s face was glowing with radiance and this overwhelmed the sage. He became anxious and asked who he was. The boy replied that he had no father no mother and none at home. Vilwamangalam felt pity for the boy and allowed him to stay there. The boy proposed a condition that whenever he feels humiliated he will leave the place at once. He served the sage for sometime. But soon his juvenile pranks became intolerable for the sage and he reacted violently. Humiliated the boy disappeared from there after proclaiming that if Vilwamangalam wants to see him he would have to go to Ananthankat, the forest of serpent god Anantha.
Vilwamangalam soon realized that the boy was none but the lord himself and he had great repentance. He found a cave at the place where the boy disappeared and he proceeded further into the cave in search of the boy. He reached the sea and proceeded further toward the south and at last he reached a woody area near the sea. Vilwamangalam saw the child who soon disappeared into huge illippa tree (Indian butter tree or Mahua tree). Immediately the tree fell down and assumed the shape of Lord Vishnu lying on a thousands hooded serpent.
King Manaveda told Vilwamangalam about his ambition to view Krishna The next day the Swamiyar told him that Guruvayurappan has given his consent and Manavedan can see Guruvayurappan playing in the early hours of the morning at the platform of the Elanji tree.He could only see and not touch Him.When as per this agreement, Manavedan saw Guruvayurappan in the form of little child Sri Krishna, he was so excited that he forgot himself and, rushed to embrace little Sree Krishna.Guruvayoorappan immediately disappeared saying, "Vilwamangalam did not tell me that this will happen ".However, Manavedan got one peacock feather from the head gear of Bhagavan Krishna.

It is believed that the famous Indian Saint Vilwamangalam Swamiyar consecrated Devi in this temple. While he was going back after consecrating 'Padmanabha Swamy' at Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram he saw Devi at this place and consecrated her in this place is the popular belief.
Shree Krishna Karnamrutam is a work in Sanskrit by the poet Shree Bilvamangala Swami variously known as Vilvamangalam Swami, Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, Bilwamangala Thakura and Leelashuka. The word karnamruta means nectar to the ears. Lelasuka compares that to a bouquet of glory of Krishna.
The Eravikulangara temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Bhagavan Shiva and Bhagavan Ayyappan. Vilwamangalam Swamiyar had 'The Darshan of Devi' (the sight of the divine) at this place, hence the hillock where the temple is situated is also called Thiruviluam Kunnu.
If these legends are to be believed, there must have been more than one Vilwamangalam Swaamiyaar, since historically these events must have occurred in different periods. Ulloor S Parameswara Iyer (the famous poet) believes that there were at least three Swaamiyaars.
